Cabinet minister Dominic Raab would have been acting prime minister in an 'ideal world', the 1922 Tory committee treasurer said, but conceded: 'This ship has sailed'.

Sir Geoffrey Clinton-Brown's comments came after Boris Johnson filled vacant cabinet posts, pledging not to "implement any new policies or make major changes in direction" during his remaining term. p>

But amid anger over the Prime Minister's conduct, a string of Tory backbenchers have called on Mr Johnson to resign immediately - rather than act as Prime Minister interim until a new Conservative leader is elected.
