A retiree has died after being mauled by a starving pit bull she took to her vacation home.

Briton Anne Shields, 67, suffered 'catastrophic' head and arm injuries after the dog suddenly turned on her at her holiday home in Valencia, Spain.

Neighbors sounded the alarm when they heard Anne's cries in Macastre, near Valencia in Spain.

Police who rushed to the address shot the dog - named Choccy - so medics could reach Anne.

Anne died the next day in hospital.

Daughter Sarah, 43, from Preston, said her mum loves animals and couldn't bear the thought of sending Choccy back on the streets.
