A woman who was hailed as a hero for jumping in front of an oncoming train to save a stranger's life was a 'beautiful soul', her longtime partner says, after her death at the age of 33.

Ashley Montabello jumped off the tracks at Sydney's Redfern Station last April after a 57-year-old man passed out and fell from the platform.

The jaw-dropping moment was filmed as Ashley desperately tried to wake him up, as the train raced down the tracks.

Miraculously, an attendant managed to flag the driver down before he stopped inches from the pair.

Through Ashley's heroic efforts, no injuries were reported, the man was taken to hospital for brief treatment.

Now Ashley's longtime boyfriend Tommy Cloos, 60, has confirmed she died in February, adding that she was 'too young to go'.

The couple, who met a decade ago when she moved to Sydney aged 23, planned to marry and have children in the near future, Tommy says .

His last words before his untimely death were "I love you", he added.

Although he was not with his girlfriend on the day of the heroic rescue, he said he was not surprised by the selfless act.
