Puerto Rico's El Gran Combo Celebrates 60 Years of Salsa in New Jersey PAC

El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is Puerto Rico's most successful musical group and "the most popular salsa band that has ever existed".

The band formed in 1962 from the remains of Cortijo's Combo beginning with Rafael Cortijo and Ismael Rivera. Cortijo and Rivera put Bomba Síca rhythms into La Salsa. It's as Puerto Rican as it gets. You can hear it. Gran Combo's sound is Puerto Rican Islander, not Puerto Rican New York.

Caribbean culture has a tradition of naughty lyrics expressed in a sweet, almost quaint way. Gran Combo's lyrics are clean, but filled with double meanings, especially the food. For example, "Azuquita Pa'l Cafe" describes something more explicit than a little milk for coffee. LOL.

El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico celebrates 60 years of Puerto Rican salsa at the Kupferberg Center at Queens College in Flushing, Queens on Friday, October 7, 2022 at 8 p.m. Starting at $59.
