Eurostar vs Megabus: Paris to Newcastle by train then car, from a £276 sleeper to a £17 coach seat

Eurostar vs Megabus: An eye-opening journey from Paris to Newcastle on a 186mph train in a £276 first-class sleeper - then in a £17 seat in a coach with a 'terrifying to use' loo Carlton Reid is boarded a Eurostar in Paris, sat in the coveted Business Premier Once in London, upgraded to the Megabus Queen Elizabus II coach The Megabus journey costs 16 pence per mile, Paris to London 79 pence per mile

I flew first class from Paris to London on Eurostar but then switched to Megabus no frills for the final leg of a return trip to Newcastle on Tyne. How's it feel to go from pure luxury to cheap?

Actually, not so bad. If I could afford it, naturally, I'd opt for the luxury option every time, but it's not every day that I get invited on an all-expenses-paid VIP trip from London to Paris. (I received direct access to the Rock en Seine music festival through the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program - see sidebar below.)

As it was my paltry bank balance that took the hit for the ride home, it was a no-brainer to book Megabus.

Carlton Reid traveled on a Eurostar from Paris in London - and had a seat in the swanky Business Premier section of the train
