Everton star insists they've 'added players with the quality' of Tottenham newcomer - 'a bargain'

Andros Townsend is confident Everton were able to adequately replace Tottenham Hotspur star Richarlison during the summer.

Richarlison was a star player for the Toffees for several seasons. He has arguably never been more important to Everton than he was towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

The striker put in brilliant performances helping Frank Lampard's side stay in the Premier League.

Richarlison left in the summer when Tottenham signed him for a total fee of around £60m.

The Brazil international has impressed in recent weeks and is already becoming a fan favorite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Everton have spent Richarlison's money wisely. Amadou Onana in particular seems like a brilliant addition. The former West Ham target joined them from Lille for around £31million.

They also spent fees to sign Dwight McNeil, Neal Maupay, James Garner and Idrissa Gueye.

Townsend confident Everton 'have added players with the quality and mentality of Richarlison':

“Any club would miss the quality of Richarlison and what he brings to the team, but I think we were able to add four or five players for the price of Richarlison,” Townsend told talkSPORT .

"We added players with the quality and mentality of Richarlison.

"You see him playing for Spurs chasing every ball and drawing in the crowd and I think we have that in Neal Maupay and [Amadou] Onana in midfield.

"We added more bodies that we needed, and more bodies that we didn't have last season.

"Yeah, we'd love Richarlison, but we've done well, and he's scoring in the Champions League, so it's a good deal for both parties."

Townend went even further in praising Maupay. He thinks the former Brighton and Hove Albion striker is a 'great teammate' who he loves now that he's one of his teammates at Everton:

"He's a player who, when he's in your dressing room, you love him," Townsend added.

"You love what he brings but as an opponent you absolutely hate him!

"I remember playing with him when he was at Brighton - I know you want the headlines, I didn't hate him but he's a player who knows how to put you in your shoes and he knows the dark arts of football.< /p>

"Obviously when you play him he rubs you the wrong way, but when he's on your team you want him to go out there and do whatever he does, dark arts and home, as you call it.

"He's a great teammate and we're all delighted he scored his goal on Sunday."
