Former detainee at Australia's offshore refugee detention center shares fears over UK plan for Rwanda

When Ellie Shakiba arrived on the island of Nauru, a 21 km² rocky area in the Pacific Ocean, she thought she would not stay there long.

She had survived to a perilous journey from Iran, through Indonesia, through the hands of smugglers and across the Indian Ocean.

With her head full of warm expectations of the Western world, she had hoped that Australia would welcome her as a refugee. Instead, she was sent to a detention center 2,800 miles away.
