Female gangsters are the new organized crime 'phenomenon' gripping Mexico as female assassins complete the hits for drug cartels.

Officials in the northern Mexican state of Zacatecas have noticed that more and more women are becoming embroiled in the shady world of Mexican drug gangs.

Footage released by Milenio TV shows a unit of balaclava-clad women draped in tactical military uniforms carrying assault rifles as they move with convoys of male cartel members.

The journalist claimed "this is a phenomenon that has never been recorded before".

“These women were filmed in their role as assassins and leaders of these groups,” he added.

It happened during a cartel raid on a State Police convoy the same day.

Speaking to Milenio TV, officials were unable to determine how many women they believe may be active in gangs, but said it has "increased in recent months".
