A village in the French Alps demolishes a ski lift last used 14 years ago because there is not enough snow

The village of Saint-Firmin in southeastern France is no longer experiencing heavy snowfall like in the past - and a ski lift built in 1964 was demolished as it did has not been used since 2008

A village in the French Alps has demolished its ski lift because the area no longer experiences significant snowfall.

Residents of Saint-Firmin, in southeastern France, said their view of the village had changed due to global warming.

The ski lift was originally installed in 1964 to help local children learn to ski before heading to more challenging runs around the Alps.

Although Saint-Firmin used to enjoy regular snowfall in winter, this is no longer the case due to climate change.

Didier Beauzon, a local resident, said the last time the lift was used was in 2008 for a weekend - and it hasn't been in operation since then.

The 63-year-old said: "Global warming happened, and that's what changed our view of this site. Well, we had to give it back to nature."

Talking about the village lift, he said: "Lack of snow meant that the last time it operated was about 15 years ago and for a single weekend. Since therefore, it was no longer used."

Mr. Beauzon explained that when he was a child, the local sports association organized competitions on weekends and that children could win prizes if they got to the bottom of the mountain.

The events were "a good laugh" for everyone and there was a positive atmosphere, he added.
