There are now five energy companies paying their customers up to £100 just for off-peak electricity use.

These energy providers reward households that do not use electricity during peak hours.

The scheme is set up to avoid power outages this winter, after the National Electricity Grid Operator (ESO) said Britons could face planned three-hour blackouts in the event gas shortage.

That was the worst-case scenario outlined in a report last month - and system operators insist it's 'unlikely' we'll run out of power.

But the prospect of blackouts has led several energy companies to set up compensation plans for this winter.

Some are being launched under the umbrella of Ofgem's official demand-side flexibility service, but many energy companies have unveiled their own schemes.

According to the ESO, participating could save a typical household £100 this winter, but you must have a smart meter to participate.

Octopus Energy: Octopus Energy, which piloted the ESO program earlier this year, was the first supplier to officially join the new initiative.

It expects to pay customers £4 on average during peak hours between November and March through its Saving Sessions service.

Octopus says households could save £100 in total over the winter if their electricity use was reduced by 1kWh once or twice a week, up to around 25 times.

The money will be paid out in the form of "OctoPoints" which you can redeem in your energy account as a credit in pounds.
