Glamorgan Cricket: County oppose Championship and T20 cups

It was suggested to reduce the number of league games from 14 to 10, to improve England standards.

The measure met with hostility from Glamorgan members.

Welsh County will also push for a reduction in the time given to The Hundred Franchise Tournament.

Glamorgan's statement follows a members' forum called to discuss the Strauss Review, which was commissioned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after a series of poor performances in the England Tests.

The review was published after a summer in which the Angle earth won six of seven tests, following the appointment of Ben Stokes as captain and Brendan McCullum as coach.

Glamorgan has just over 2,000 members, of which around 120 attend the forum and express universal opposition to having less cricket to watch.

Counties are currently playing 14 four-day matches, 14 Twenty20 matches and eight one-day Cup matches before any knockout stage.

England captain Jos Buttler suggested that a reduction in matches "would allow players to prepare properly, to recover properly and put much more emphasis on these games...the standard could potentially be higher".

But the whole cut would have to be approved by two-thirds of the 18 counties and seems certain to be rejected.

Sussex chairman Jon Filby has condemned the proposals as "unworkable" and Glamorgan will join in opposition when the county votes for presidents, which will likely take place in November.

A club statement to members said: "Glamorgan does not support a reduction in the number of County Championship matches.. a reduction in the number of Vitality Blast matches.. [or] a knockout competition in the Royal London Cup.. [he wants] the competition [50 overs] to be played alongside The Hundred."

The highly marketed The Hundred attracted exceptional crowds at eight top UK grounds, including Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, and is part of TV deals through 2028.

But he has been criticized by existing county supporters for stripping their teams of leading performers and Glamorgan will push for a shortening of his one-month window, despite gaining more financial benefits from Welsh Fire than the 10 counties that do not host a franchise team.

In the meantime, changes in the system of Championship bonus points and the number of counties in the top division, currently 10, will likely remain under discussion as the ECB and county leaders try to reach a consensus on the shape of the domestic professional game.
