Hannah Gadsby has signed a new deal with Netflix to hopefully change the 'notoriously transphobic industry'

"In an effort to further open a door that I had to fight to get through myself, I will be curating and hosting a line-up show on Netflix featuring six new comedians from diverse genres," Gadsby said in Netflix's official announcement for the deal. "In a notoriously transphobic industry, I seek to expand the scope of opportunities for genderqueer performers around the world, as well as expand the diversity of offerings to audiences on one of the largest comedy platforms." The special is paired with a mentorship initiative to help build the skills and visibility of comedians from marginalized gender identities, with sets due to be taped sometime in 2023. "It will be a chance for the world to hear these voices for the first time, but certainly not the last time," they said.

Netflix is, regardless of its questionable ethics, still the biggest streaming platform out there. Gadsby was right to call out the company for its apology of Chappelle's blatant transphobia, and was doubly right to note that the company was not paying them enough to deal with the fallout of those actions. There are certainly those who view the return to streamer as hypocritical, but clearly this is how Gadsby is making the company pay for putting them in such an unfair position in 2020.

Honestly? GOOD FOR THEM. Insult the company in front, win a big check, amplify yourself, and have the chance to amplify even more marginalized comedians? It's not hypocrisy, it's breaking the game from within.
