Shark expert Jimi Partington had a missed encounter with a great white shark that attacked and destroyed the enclosure he was sitting in, forcing him to swim for his life

A terrifying moment, a shark destroys the diver's enclosure

A huge great white shark destroys the protective cage of a diver, who is forced to swim to safety in terrifying footage.

The video shows expert diver Jimi Partington climbing into the transparent cage while the apex predator swims nearby among a school of fish.

After climbing, Jimi looks out into the clear waters and observes the curious 16-foot shark which repeatedly comes closer and closer.

During its final run, the shark suddenly accelerates and smashes into the plexiglass box, throwing the diver overboard.

In a breathtaking video, filmed in 2020, he repeatedly tries to backtrack before finally giving up and frantically swimming towards a nearby boat.

The footage was shared as part of Discovery's Shark Week.

Jeff Kurr, the producer and director, said: "Great White Open Ocean is a film that follows the story of a friend of mine, an expert diver named Jimi Partington.

"He actually survived being hit from below by a 16ft Great White.

"We were able to film this encounter, and it is probably the most spectacular sequence in the history of Shark Week.
