If You Invested $1,000 When Elon Musk Said Tesla Stock Price Was Too High, Here's How Much You'd Have Now

The richest man in the world is no stranger to using the Twitter Inc social media platform TWTR to share his opinions on many topics. A tweet in 2020 highlighted the stock price of one of his own companies.

What happened: On May 1, 2020, Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he believed his vehicle company's stock price electricity was too high.

The tweet came as a surprise as many CEOs avoid commenting on the stock price of their companies if they are publicly traded. Most CEOs would also avoid saying that their stock price was overvalued, as this could cause the stock to decline.

Musk's tweet was also accompanied by several other articles about overhauling his "commitment to the material world", including the CEO saying he would sell off his physical assets.

Some thought Musk's account was hacked, but years later the tweet is still there.

Tesla is Musk's most tweeted topic according to a survey tracing his tweets back to 2012. Musk is in the process of acquiring Twitter with an offer of $54.20 per share.

Invest $1,000 in Tesla: If investors agreed with Musk that the stock was overvalued and they sold or avoided an investment, they lost big gains.

Tesla shares were trading at $761 when Musk tweeted. A $1,000 investment in Tesla at the time of Musk's tweet could have bought 1.31 shares of the company.

Tesla then conducted a stock split in August 2020, which gave investors five Tesla shares for every share they owned. The 1.31 shares held would have turned into 6.55 Tesla shares.

Another stock split in August 2022 gave Tesla investors three shares for every share they owned. Tesla's 6.55 shares would have turned into 19.65 shares.

$1,000 investment in Tesla would be worth $5,309.63 today based on Tesla price of $270.21 at time of writing.

Investment in Tesla is said to have increased by 431% in the past two years and four months since Musk's tweet.

While Musk thought Tesla shares might have been overvalued at the time, they showed their worth later.
