Baby born in the amniotic sac in a rare birth

This is the incredible moment a mother gave birth to a baby still inside a perfectly intact amniotic sac.

The extremely rare event took place in Barcarena - in the state of Para, in northern Brazil - on November 22, when mum Beatriz Azevedo gave birth for the first time to baby Eloise by caesarean section.

Two minutes later, it was her twin Julia's turn.

To the doctors' surprise, Julia came out still inside the intact amniotic sac, as seen in this remarkable footage.

Known as caul birth, the phenomenon is known to occur in less than 1 in 80,000 births.

This is because the fluid-filled membrane usually ruptures when the expectant mother is about to give birth - a process commonly referred to as water rupture.

Obstetrics nurse Geovany Magalhaes of Dr Anna Turan Maternal and Child Hospital told local media: "It allowed the mother and her companion to see the baby still inside the amniotic sac, acting as if it were in the uterine environment."

After being removed from the amniotic sac, Julia received first aid and was then quickly reunited with mum Beatriz, 25, and her sister in the operating room.

The girls are the first children of Beatriz and dad Marcos Sena, 25.
