'You're allowed to overtake, aren't you?', I remarked with an evil laugh as I flew over my companion on a gravity-powered mountain cart, a three-wheeled go-kart with big tires. We were above the resort of Les Menuires in the 3 Valleys ski/bike area in the French Alps, and I was in no mood to take it slow.

With gravel behind me, I dove down the mountainside, a big child's smile on my face.

Five d 'of us had rented these mountain-specific bikes. karts at £25 per person per descent. We were given almost no rules, except the instruction to wear very fancy hairnets under rental full-face helmets.

We had reached an altitude of 2,300 meters. -a high starting gate (7,545 feet) on a gondola, flying over some of the 20 or so turns we would soon circumvent.

The shape of the switchbacks makes part of a four-kilometer (2.5-mile) downhill course, a dirt path cut into the mountainside that, in winter, becomes the Roc N Bob toboggan run. Mountain cart drivers negotiate berms, a few tame jumps and take advantage of numerous opportunities to cut in front of their slow-moving companions as they descend 500 meters (1,640 feet) in altitude.
