An actress who starred in an Oscar-winning film has been arrested by Iranian authorities for 'spreading lies'.

Taraneh Alidoosti was arrested a week after she shared an Instagram post in which she denounced the execution of Mohsen Shekari involved in the recent protests.

She is best known for her role in The Salesman.

Earlier this month, Iran announced it had hanged Shekari, who was convicted of blocking a street in Tehran and attacking a member of the country's security forces with a gun. machete.

In his message, Tareneh, 38, said: "His name was Mohsen Shekari. Every international organization that observes this bloodshed and does not act is a disgrace to humanity."

There have been widespread anti-government protests in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman after she was arrested for allegedly breaking the country's dress code in September.

Iran is facing a nationwide backlash after Amini was allegedly arrested by police for breaking strict headgear rules.

Today's announcement is the latest in a string of celebrity arrests which also included footballers and other actors in response to their open show of support for anti-government protests now in their third month.

At least 475 people have been killed during the protests in a brutal security crackdown, according to human rights activists in Iran.
