A gunman opened fire at a bus stop in Jerusalem, leaving three people fighting for their lives in hospital and injuring several.

Shots were heard in the Old City early Sunday as a group of Israelis waited in a parking lot near the Western Wall, considered the holiest place for Jews to pray.

The attacker waited for the bus to arrive and fired as the passengers boarded, before fleeing on foot, according to The Times of Israel.

Injured in the attack included a 35-year-old pregnant woman who was shot while sitting in a nearby car, Hebrew media reported.

No one has claimed responsibility, but the shooting comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and the Palestinians.

"The bus was full, packed. I stopped at a bus stop at King David's tomb, then I heard gunshots, people started screaming, people were injured inside the bus,” bus driver Daniel Kanievsky told Hebrew media.

Last weekend, Israeli warplanes launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip which they say targeted the Islamic Jihad militant group. It sparked three days of heavy cross-border fighting.

Islamic Jihad fired hundreds of rockets during the eruption in revenge for the airstrikes, which killed two of its commanders and other militants
