Keane 'unconvinced' by Man Utd star, urges club to sign 'high quality' midfielder

Roy Keane has claimed Manchester United need to sign a 'high quality' new midfielder this summer amid reports linking them with Frenkie de Jong.

Erik ten Hag is the new manager of Man Utd and so far this summer they have signed Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.

Their priority signing this summer would be Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

This deal won't be easy to complete as the player's preference is still to stay at Barcelona.

Man Utd finished sixth last season and failed to win a trophy. David De Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo were arguably two of their only standout performers.

Keane is still 'not convinced' by De Gea. When asked where Man Utd need to strengthen the most this summer, the United legend told Sky Bet: "Obviously it's midfield.

"In the middle of the park, they need quality players, a bit of physicality, energy. That's where I would start."

Ex-Man City star Micah Richards then noted that United needed a better defence. To which, Keane replied, “Of course. The whole core, the full-backs, the striker and I'm not convinced by the goalkeeper."

Keane then suggested it was the 'right time' for Ten Hag to take over at Man Utd:

“For a lot of games, we repeatedly pointed out that they just gave up,” Keane continued.

"They gave up. They have to sort out that spirit, the characters in the locker room, almost rebuild the locker room - they have to get it right.

"Then the players can show their quality, as bad as they have been, they have players like [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Marcus] Rashford, they have shown they can do it at the highest level, but they need a group of guys who will fight every week and United don't even have that.

"I think it's a good time for a manager to come to Man United because he's been so poor, any manager with an ego or CV behind him will feel he can improve this Man team United, whether it's getting in the top four, winning a cup and if they do that, he'll become a club legend just for that, so it's a good time for him."
