Sir Keir Starmer has told Tory MPs they have a 'duty' to remove Boris Johnson from Number 10 immediately or face a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons next week.
< p>The Labor leader has insisted that Mr Johnson should not be allowed to continue as caretaker Prime Minister, just 24 hours after announcing his intention to step down after the election of a new one Tory leader.In a bullish press conference - just hours after he was cleared by Durham Police as part of a two-month investigation - Sir Keir said that his party was "ready" for a general election and that the country deserved a "fresh start".
"If there is a general election, this government will fall and we have a plan for the country he said.
Accusing Mr Johnson of “desperately clinging” to power, he added: “ The Conservative Party should impeach him and if they don't we will intervene in the national interest and hold a vote of no confidence”.

Answering questions, Sir Keir also stressed that there was "no basis for an alliance" with the SNP in a general election. while appearing less forceful in ruling out a coalition with the Liberal Democrats.
The Labor leader said: "I will absolutely rule it out. Let me take the SNP first: there will be no deal before a general election and no deal will come out of a general election. There is no basis, no basis for an alliance with a party that wants to break up the UK.
"So it's not just a numbers game, it's a position 'in principle'. There is no basis for an alliance under a Keir Starmer government between Labor and the SNP. Period.
"As far as the Liberal Democrats are concerned, we want a majority We want to fulfill our mission and that is what we will do. We are fighting for a majority Labor government to fulfill our mission."
