Sir Keir Starmer has told Tory MPs they have a 'duty' to remove Boris Johnson from Number 10 immediately or face a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons next week.

In a bullish press conference - just hours after he was cleared by Durham Police as part of a two-month investigation - Sir Keir said that his party was "ready" for a general election and that the country deserved a "fresh start".

"If there is a general election, this government will fall and we have a plan for the country he said.

Accusing Mr Johnson of “desperately clinging” to power, he added: “ The Conservative Party should impeach him and if they don't we will intervene in the national interest and hold a vote of no confidence”.

Pleading Tory MPs to act, he said: "I think it's incumbent on the Conservative Party to do the right thing and obviously there are meetings next week with the committee [19]22. It's up to them to do what needs to be done.

“If they don't, we will intervene with a vote of confidence. There are a lot of Tories who have said they don't trust the Prime Minister."

Answering questions, Sir Keir also stressed that there was "no basis for an alliance" with the SNP in a general election. while appearing less forceful in ruling out a coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

The Labor leader said: "I will absolutely rule it out. Let me take the SNP first: there will be no deal before a general election and no deal will come out of a general election. There is no basis, no basis for an alliance with a party that wants to break up the UK.

"So it's not just a numbers game, it's a position 'in principle'. There is no basis for an alliance under a Keir Starmer government between Labor and the SNP. Period.

"As far as the Liberal Democrats are concerned, we want a majority We want to fulfill our mission and that is what we will do. We are fighting for a majority Labor government to fulfill our mission."
