Klopp reveals why Trent was substituted in Arsenal loss; claims Gunners penalty was 'soft'

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold was substituted in the loss to Arsenal through injury.

It was a difficult afternoon for Alexander-Arnold, who was exposed by Martinelli for both Arsenal goals in the first 45 minutes.

The England defender was able to ignore a rough follow-up from Gabriel Martinelli as he finished the first half at the Emirates.

After another poor defensive performance in the 3-2 loss, Trent was substituted at half-time.

While some believe he was taken off due to his defensive struggles, Klopp revealed he was replaced by Joe Gomez due to injury.

Trent and Luis Diaz are both injured, which the German coach called "icing on the cake" after another poor result.

On the game as a whole, Klopp told BBC Sport: "We created, we were really dangerous, we scored our goal, a wonderful goal. Then conceding the last second of the first half.< /p>

Obviously we made a mistake, the counterattack is the goal. This is our situation, coming to half-time knowing we were good in the game but ignoring the result.

"We wanted to continue the good things but unfortunately we didn't. We equalized, it was then a really open game.

"The situation around the penalty, of course, we should have sorted it out. Now I've seen it and I think you can imagine that I don't think it's a clear penalty, it's a very soft penalty. I think this is a situation where the referee has another look in real time.

“Two things happened against us but we are not blind, we see that we could have done better in a few moments. In general, it was a good away game against a good team. We've caused a lot of trouble, but let's stay here without points."

Klopp continued: "Arsenal are doing very well and in the situation I think we played a good game. To concede the three goals really has nothing to do with the game. We have to win challenges in those moments. They shouldn't be in those situations, but they did.

"I saw a team with the right attitude and fought well and played football and in the first half we did it, but in the second half I didn't so much seen these football moments.

"I think the match is a draw but today we have nothing."

Bukayo Saka scored twice for the Gunners, his second of the game coming from the penalty spot.

Martinelli had opened the scoring with Trent caught by Martin Odegaard's through pass.

Arsenal lead the league, ahead of Manchester City, after a remarkable victory.
