The Kremlin is playing “Russian roulette” by threatening the world with a Chernobyl-like nuclear disaster by continuing to risk a breach in a Ukrainian power plant, experts have warned.

A security expert has warned that a single misstep could "blow the brains of the reactor across Europe", causing the death of several thousand victims.

Officials claimed hours later that the plant had been reconnected to the grid and it is believed that emergency generators were used to avert the disaster.

The Ukrainian president has urged international bodies to act more quickly to force heavily armed Russian troops to evacuate the site they are using as a nuclear shield.
