A Labor MP has been suspended after making 'racist' remarks about Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng at a side event at the party conference.

Rupa Huq has had his whip suspended after he described the Tory minister as a 'superficially black man'.

A Labor source told the Mirror: 'What Rupa said was clearly totally inappropriate.

The remark sparked outrage, with Conservative chairman Jake Berry writing to Labor leader Keir Starmer and describing the comment as 'nothing short of racist'.

She has since apologized to Mr. Kwarteng, describing his remarks as "misjudged".

The shadow Home Office minister sat in a panel, alongside shadow equality minister Anneliese Dodds, at a Labor fringe event on Monday which was due to focus on the party agenda in matters of race.

A member of the public asked what policies Mr Kwarteng had rolled out in his mini budget that would positively impact the lives of black people living in Britain.

Reflecting on Mr Kwarteng's standing in government as a black man, Ms Huq said: 'What impact has this had on his appointment as Chancellor and what impact has this had? he had on his economic policy?"

Ms. Huq replied, "I'm sorry if I didn't make myself understood.

"On the surface, he looks like a black man. But again, he has more in common...if you look again, it's about Jo Cox and More in Common.

"If you look at the stream, he went to Eton, I think he went to a very expensive preparatory school all the way to the best schools in the country.

"If you heard him on the Today show, you wouldn't know he was black...
