I got into politics late after a long career. It makes me impatient.

It's also painful to see what the Conservatives are doing to the country I love.

Liz Truss' kamikaze budget was a spending spree of unfunded tax cuts for the wealthy. It was a reckless gamble with the family finances of each household.

As a result, the whole country lost.

Mortgage loans have exploded, businesses are threatened with ruin, people's hopes and ambitions have been dashed.

The prime minister's partial and humiliating reversal was necessary. But the damage has been done. The Conservatives must go. Britain needs a fresh start.

Who knows how much more they will have to do when we finally see the state of public finances? There are still unfunded tax cuts for the rich in the budget that will have to be reversed.

Since I set out Labour's plans to develop our economy, the Tories have had four Chancellors. A change of personnel won't fix things - we need a new government.
