Labour would create a national landlord register to protect 'Generation Rent' from unscrupulous landlords, Keir Starmer told the Sunday Mirror.

The Labor leader said his party would support a 'talented generation' who are being 'left behind and forced to struggle' with skyrocketing rents imposed by rogue landlords.

The pledge came as hundreds of Sunday Mirror readers this week sent questions to Mr Starmer and deputy Labor leader Angela Rayner - on topics as diverse as Brexit, food banks - and the cost of a weekly store.

Rishi Sunak last year destroyed house building targets to avoid an embarrassing backbench rebellion. But Labor today pledged to reinstate a requirement for regions to build to local needs and to 'build the homes that young people aspire to own'.

Mr. Starmer told the Mirror: "There is a whole generation of young people who dream of home ownership and who now feel unreachable and unrealistic.

“Generational annuity has been completely abandoned by this government. Left to try to cope with a cost of living crisis forcing them into an endless spiral of costs, and too many unscrupulous landlords with the power to make what they want."

He added: "It is impossible to hide the fact that there are rogue landlords and generational renters are left with little, and sometimes no measures to protect themselves. That is why I am committed to put put in place a national registry of landlords, allowing us to crack down on people who take advantage of the system."
