A pensioner has triggered a hospital evacuation after coming to A&E with a World War I artillery shell in his back.

The 88-year-old arrived at Sainte Musse Hospital in Toulon, southern France, and told doctors he had something in his anus.

Doctors were shocked when they discovered an eight-inch-long World War I artifact.

As a precaution, the hospital was completely evacuated after the incident.

Doctors were later photographed holding the item after the operation, before it was handed over to experts and safely destroyed.

It is believed that the old man had inserted the collectible into his buttocks for sexual pleasure.

"We had to manage the risk in a reactive framework. When in doubt, we took every precaution."

Detonation experts were also consulted before the operation, who determined that there was little risk of the shell exploding during the operation, according to the French news agency.
