MeetKai has rolled out new tools for creators as part of its ambition to create a portfolio of metaverse and conversational AI technologies.

Los Angeles-based MeetKai has more than 50 million users worldwide, largely thanks to its conversational AI technology. It's now heading to the metaverse and showcasing its tools at the CES 2023 tech show in Las Vegas this week.

The company unveiled MeetKai Reality, MeetKai Metaverse Editor and MeetKai Cloud AI to help users create seamless metaverse experiences.

Rather than aiming for the extreme high-end of 3D graphics, MeetKai targets experiences that anyone can access through a web browser, without the need for expensive specialized hardware, CEO James Kaplan said in an interview with GamesBeat.

The company is led by artificial intelligence expert Kaplan and billionaire investor and veteran semiconductor Weili Dai, who serves as its executive chairman.

Last year, the MeetKai team traveled to New York to unveil a demo for a metaverse, which you could access on your phone via a QR code on a billboard in Times Square . When you tapped on it with your smartphone's camera app, the browser app generated an animated version of Times Square where you can walk around with your avatar. You can control where your avatar goes on the phone.

Based on the feedback from this demo, MeetKai has started working on the tools it announced today, Dai said, in an interview with GamesBeat.

"If you want to make the metaverse, it's not like making a game," Dai said. “If we try to build everything ourselves, I think we will fail, just like Meta. It's about building a ton of tools. It's like seeing a lot of high quality websites. Some use a template and they have a high quality website that works on both mobile and desktop at very low costs. It's very effective."

One of the lessons was to focus on realism. As the buzz around the metaverse grew, Kaplan and his team disagreed with the move from the real world to the virtual world. He felt that mixing the real world and the metaverse was the right decision.

Kaplan added: "We've done a lot of work since our Times Square trial," Kaplan said. “We've learned a lot about what works, we've learned a lot about what doesn't. And one of the things that we really took away from it is that the interiors matter a lot. Many of these metaverse experiences seem lumpy. So there's a huge opportunity if you can do things that look really good. And that's what we really decided to do."
