Modric doubt for Copa del Rey final and huge Man City draw with thigh injury

Luka Modric could miss Real Madrid's Copa del Rey final with Osasuna and the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Manchester City after suffering a thigh injury.

Modric injured his left leg in Madrid's surprise 4-2 defeat at Girona on Tuesday, a result that kept them 11 points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.

The blow comes at an unfortunate time for Los Blancos, who will try to end a nine-year wait to lift the Copa del Rey on May 6, before hosting City three days later.

Asked about Modric's fitness ahead of Saturday's game against Almeria, Ancelotti admitted losing the Croatian's experience would be a big setback.

"He got injured in the game against Girona. We'll see how he progresses in the next few days," Ancelotti said.

"He will be doubtful for the Copa final. We have to assess him, we are injured, but it can happen. I hope he recovers for the important matches.

"We have very important midfielders like Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouameni. We have many resources.

"But to replace Luka...you can't replace his experience in these kinds of games."

Madrid have won only four of their last nine league games (D2 L3) to allow Barça to clear the top.

Pushed on why Madrid have failed to replicate their La Liga cup exploits this season, Ancelotti said: "I don't know, it's a matter of concentration, it's normal not to not always be able to be at the top.

"The schedule is very busy and I see many coaches complaining about it. We are human and it's the truth, sometimes I can't prepare all the games the same way either.

"In some games you focus better, and in others it's worse. It happens to everyone, on good days and bad.

"You have to trust the players. I see the group in great shape. What happened last season is unforgettable and we want to repeat it."
