Nadine Dorries is set to earn an extra £22,000 from the taxpayer by clinging to her job in Parliament over the summer - despite promising to step down over a month ago.

The former culture secretary has said she will quit her Mid-Bedfordshire seat furious at her failure to secure a peerage in the resignation honors list by Boris Johnson, alleging "posh boy" Rishi Sunak blocked him.< /p>

Johnson's ally announced on June 9 that she was leaving with "immediate effect". But she has yet to formally step down - demanding that the Sunak government hand over documents related to the peerage decision before she leaves.

Most Tory MPs now expect her to wait later in the year before finally leaving parliament. But some fear she'll try to hang on until the general election, likely in the fall of 2024.

'I doubt she'll quit now,' a senior Tory official told The Independent, saying Ms Dorries was ‘out of her rocker’ and wanted to hang around as long as possible to cause as much trouble as possible for Mr Sunak.

She should stay in her post during the parliamentary period the summer recess, which begins on July 20 – the same day that three by-elections are held in the Conservative seats. That would give him at least three months of his £86,000 salary - almost £22,000 before tax - since pledging to quit.

Failing to resign in time for a by-election in Mid-Bedfordshire to be called up alongside others in Uxbridge, Selby and Somerton and Frome, some Tory MPs expect Ms Dorries to eventually step down in the weeks after parliament returns on September 4.

A former Tory cabinet minister told The Independent: 'We don't have a Mid-Bedfordshire by-election until the autumn now. She wants to inflict maximum harm on Rishi Sunak, so an awkward by-election in the fall around the party conference will."

But another senior Tory said Ms Dorries could try to prolong her spell as a "persistent MP much longer, partly to get the Prime Minister in trouble and partly for pay.
