New 4K Restoration Trailer For Claire Denis' Feature Debut "Chocolate"

Chocolate Trailer

"Sensual. Intimate. Sophisticated. Magnificent." Janus Films has unveiled an official trailer and new poster for the 4K restoration re-release of Chocolat, the feature film directorial debut of the famous French director Claire Denis. This premiered at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and launched the career of this talented filmmaker. Not to be confused with Lasse Hallström's Chocolate, which won five Oscar nominations, this one is a totally different film - set in Africa. A Frenchwoman returns to her childhood home in Cameroon - once a colonial outpost - where she is flooded with memories, especially of Proteus, her childhood servant. With Mireille Perrier, Isaach De Bankolé, Giulia Boschi and François Cluzet. This new 4K digital restoration released by Janus Films has been supervised and approved by director Claire Denis, with a mono soundtrack. The restoration is carried out by the Eclair Classics laboratory from the original feature film negative with the colorist Bruno Patin and Diego Mercuriali and with the director of photography Robert Alazraki. It really looks stunning - definitely worth a visit if you're in/around New York.

Chocolate Poster

Denis drew inspiration from her own childhood experiences in colonial French Africa for her multi-layered, languidly engrossing feature debut, which explores many of the themes that recur throughout her work. Back in the town where she grew up in Cameroon after many years spent in France, a white woman (Mireille Perrier) reflects on her relationship with Protée (Isaach De Bankolé), a black servant with whom she bonded from friendship without fully grasping the racial divides that ruled their worlds. Chocolate is directed by French filmmaker Claire Denis, for her feature debut in 1988. The screenplay is written by Claire Denis and Jean -Pol Fargeau. This was first shown at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival years ago. It also played at the Toronto Film Festival and was first shown in US theaters in May 1989. This new 4K restoration by Denis' Chocolat will debut at Lincoln Center in New York City from February 24, 2023 this winter. For more information on the re-release, visit the official Janus Films website. Is anyone going to watch?
