2023: Teachers highlight their role in the fight for good governance

As Nigerians head towards elections in 2023, World Teachers' Day organizer Moses Paul highlighted the role of teachers in the fight for good governance.

Paul said teachers could educate voters about voter fraud.

He emphasized that teachers are social agents of change; hence, they ensure good governance in the society.

A statement that Paul issued reads in part: "Education plays a fundamental role in the development of society. When politics is properly educated, a new future is born. Teachers are the educators who shape the future societies through their work.

“A teacher who can envision an egalitarian and ideal society is able to give birth to a whole new order of future leaders and citizens.

“In light of the above, teachers are social agents of change. No revolution in society can be complete without the involvement of teachers.

"Teachers are the mirror of the highest ideals of society. We cannot be better than the teachers who guide us in our quest for knowledge.

On the steps to engagement for good governance, Paul said, "Say NO to vote buying in the 2023 general election.

“Discourage any involvement in acts of violence before, during and after the elections.

“Vote buying has become a troubling feature of the Nigerian democratic process. The buying and selling of votes has increased the monetization of the electoral process whereby the highest bidder gets the most votes. corrupts the electoral process and rejects bad candidates at the expense of good politicians. When bad candidates emerge victorious, the country suffers. This is a criminal offense that undermines the sanctity and credibility of the electoral process.

“As an electorate, do not expect democratic dividends from leaders who have emerged through corrupt practices. These leaders must first recoup their investment before delivering on their campaign promises. Don't be swayed this election season. A credible government won't have you selling your future for a loaf of bread or a bag of salt."
