Rivers State Governor Nyesom WikeRivers State Governor Nyesom Wike

Wike disagreed with Governor Obaseki of Edo State and did not support Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa, openly expressing his preference for Timi Alaibe in the Bayelsa primaries. Wike will transition to effective "lameduck" status by the end of the year, if we are not careful.

Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Governor of Rivers State, has been rather quiet lately. He had spent days and weeks hurling blows, tirades and tantrums at a number of political leaders and personalities, who he said colluded in denying him the presidential ticket of his party, the Parti Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP).

His name was on the newly-formed PDP National Campaign Council, set up to spearhead the presidential project of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the party. Hopefully Wike has achieved some rapprochement with his party for being included in this list. But just in case he didn't, Wike may have found himself out in the cold in the ongoing PDP calculation. He may have overestimated his importance and what his condition can potentially bring to the table, and met his reward. His 'aseju', to borrow the Yoruba word, may have consumed him.

The appointment of Governor Udom Emmanuel as Chairman of the Presidential Campaign Council has potentially dampened Wike's arrogance. Udom brings calm and urbanity to the project. He flies a state-owned jet like Wike, has a "deep pocket" and respectable electoral numbers. Add Delta State, which currently has nearly the same number of voters as Rivers State, and South South is nearly closed without Wike.

Wike disagreed with Governor Obaseki of Edo State and did not support Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa, openly expressing his preference for Timi Alaibe in the Bayelsa primaries. Wike will slip into effective "lameduck" status by the end of the year, if we are not careful. He will fight to induct his favorite successor wanted by the EFCC. Magnus Abe's defection to the SDP may prompt his Ogoni parents to vote SDP, despite Wike. The rejection by the powers that be at the Presidential Villa of his recent negotiations with Bola Ahmed Tinubu in London, on the grounds that the party will not dump Rotimi Amaechi, may have further deepened his confusion.

Wike unquestionably remains one of the biggest beneficiaries of the current political dispensation. He has recorded 24 full years of mandate at our municipal expense. He went from chairman of local government to chief of staff, then governor of Rivers State, then minister of state, line minister and finally ultra-influential governor of Rivers State. He is a victim of personal greed and boastful ambition. His best bet? Stick with his party so he can get some protection if his party wins. EFCC certainly has a way of showing up with petitions we didn't know it had in its kitty.

Wike's ally in the southwest and Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, may soon find himself the only opponent...
