Grassroots empowerment has been identified as key in assessing the incoming presidency led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the 10th National Assembly.

Specifically, the success, or not, of the incoming administration will be determined by its impact on the Nigerian local government system, Otunba Ade Adeshina told the Guardian in an interview about setting the agenda of the administration which will be inaugurated on May 29. and aimed at meeting the aspirations of all Nigerians.

“Seek first the base realm, and all; security, economic prosperity and the general well-being of the nation will be added to you,” said Adeshina, a UK-based local government administration expert and chief executive of the Bola Tinubu Support Organization (BTSO-UK).

To achieve what he calls community economic regeneration and development in Nigeria's 774 local governments, Adeshina said it was imperative to establish a federal ministry of local government and chiefdom affairs.

"This will be a federal point of reference and convergence for the federation's 774 local governments to monitor each LC's funding allocations and ensure funds are effectively used for regeneration and recovery purposes. rural development," he said.

With this in mind, Adeshina called for the establishment of a Community Economic Regeneration and Development Task Force that will work with each local council.

According to him, the aim is to identify and develop specific projects and initiatives as needed; identify the comparative advantage of each local council and leverage it to ensure that each local council can grow at its own pace based on the level of additional resources available locally and outside of federal allocations.

Similarly, he said, it would ensure that cost-effective projects and initiatives are rolled out using local labor and resources to ensure rapid economic regeneration and development within each council local.

“Let me add that this will also identify other external/international funding sources that will help drive economic development in the 774 LGs of Nigeria.

“This will create a bottom-up approach to economic regeneration and development; thus ensuring that the gains of democracy are felt quickly in popular and rural areas, thus transforming villages into towns and cities in a short time,” he said.

Adeshina, who is an accomplished community leader, UK immigration adviser, community economic regeneration strategic policy professional and consultant, is a certified automotive engineer.

He is CEO of O"-Bay Community Trust - an organization which has worked on a pan-London basis for over three decades, on poverty eradication initiatives for poor and working class families.< /p>

Since 1997 he has been Governor of the Local Education Authority (LEA) in primary and secondary schools as an educator in the London Borough of Enfield.

Adeshina said he was not bothered by the constitutional controversy that still dogged the local government system in Nigeria. "It doesn't matter whether we consider local government as the second or third level of governance in Nigeria," he said.

What matters, he says, is the need for effective and sustainable grassroots governance. He said restructuring should start with a breath of fresh air in grassroots administration.

He said: "This is what is done in all progressive countries, globally. Let's be clear about the creation of a special community of economic regeneration and development, it is not a LG project to deliver, but the federal government.

"For example, in the United Kingdom, it is a special project that sits...
