Once again, gunmen attack Imo court, burn documents

Gunmen attacked the Imo State High Court in the Orlu local government area of the state on Saturday.

The thugs also allegedly burned sensitive documents in the court complex housing both the High Court and a magistrate's court.

This development makes this the second time the court has been set on fire. In 2018, the high court was razed and on Saturday the court was again set on fire by assailants.

According to one of the court clerks, who spoke on condition of anonymity, "All sensitive records in the building have been burned."

Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Orlu Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barnabas Munonye confirmed the incident, calling it “unfortunate”.

He said his attention was drawn to the incident by the association's administrative secretary early Saturday morning.

Spokesman for Imo State Police Command, CSP Mike Abattam also confirmed the incident, adding that police have opened an investigation into the incident.

The PUNCH had reported a few days ago that armed men had also attacked the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Owerri.
