Anambra: Police step up patrols as rival sects clash in Awka

Sources around Zik Avenue in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, reported heavy fire among cultists in the area.

A source told the DAILY POST that the shooting was carried out by rival sectarian groups, who clashed in the early hours of Saturday.

According to the source, residents of the area rushed for safety during the shooting.

State Police Command confirmed the shooting, saying patrols have been stepped up in the area and throughout Awka.

State Police Command Spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said, “Following the sound of gunfire by Zik Avenue, Awka, police patrols have been intensified in Awka.

"Preliminary information reveals that the cause of the shooting was the result of a cult-related incident/clashes.

"The situation is being closely monitored and further developments will be communicated."

Meanwhile, Ikenga urged the good people of Anambra to remain security conscious and continue to provide the police with useful information that will help effectively track down criminal elements in society.

He said: "They (residents) are encouraged to report suspicious people or movements to the nearest police station or via the 112 command emergency numbers or call 07039194332 for a quick response.< /p>
