Brazilian clubs dominate Copa Libertadores; Flamengo and Corinthians reunited

July 8 - Will a Brazilian club win the Copa Libertadores again this season? With Argentina's Boca Juniors and River Plate eliminated and all of Flamengo, Corinthians, Palmeiras and Atletico Mineiro in the last eight, Brazil's dominance in South America's premier club competition is undeniable.

The Buenos Aires giants exited the competition earlier this week, with River Plate surprisingly falling to city rivals Velez Sarsfield 1-0 on aggregate while Boca Juniors were edged out after a penalty shoot-out by Sao Paulo giants Corinthians, who will meet 2019 winners and last year's runners-up Flamengo in the quarter-finals.

The Rio giants narrowly won 1-0 against Deportivo Tolima in Colombia, but completely annihilated their opponents in the second leg in a crowded Maracana, 7-1. Forward Pedro scored four times in the resounding victory.

“It was the most special match, certainly among the most important,” Pedro said. "Four goals in a Libertadores game is not for every player. It's all in the past, I had some tough times, but I'm thinking and focusing on the moment I'm living."

Defending champion Palmeiras beat Paraguay's Cerro Porteno 8-0 over two legs to set up a last-eight tie against Brazilian champions Atletico Mineiro, who edged Emelec 2-1 on aggregate.

"That's what we have to do," Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira said following criticism of the club's draw with Avai. "You really have to believe in it. When the coach does stupid things and the players play badly, we have to believe and support because that's [what it means] to be part of the Palmeiras family."

Fortaleza were the only Brazilian club to be knocked out in the second round, losing to Argentinian Estudiantes 4-1 on aggregate. They will face Athletico PR in the last eight.

Guayaquil, Ecuador will host this year's final on October 29.

Quarter-finals:

Palmeiras vs Atlético Mineiro

Flamengo versus Corinthians

Velez Sarsfield v Tallares Cordoba

Estudiantes vs Athletico PR
