Collapsed building: Lagos government orders arrest of developer and construction experts

The Lagos State government has announced that it has ordered the arrest of the developer and construction professionals working on the seventh floor structure which collapsed on Sunday morning.

A statement from Mukaila Sanusi, spokesperson for the Lagos State Ministry of Land and Urban Development, said the building, which is being constructed, is located on Oba Abiodun Oniru Road , in the region of Iru/Victoria Island.

Ministry commissioner Idris Salako gave the order during his visit to the collapsed site.

Mr. Salako said the developer and the professionals were liable because they failed to follow state planning laws.

According to him, it is to have embarked on construction without a valid planning permit and ignoring official warnings against continuing construction work.

He said that under no circumstances should anyone interpret the filing of a permit application through the Lagos State Physical Development Permits Authority as a ticket to commence construction .

He said: "There must be a valid planning permission from the aforementioned agency in addition to the clearance letter and staged inspection at each stage and certification by the Lagos State Building Control (LASBCA).

"This will ensure that the construction works are carried out in accordance with the approval granted".

The commissioner, however, said police had launched a manhunt for the developer, architects, builders and engineers involved in the project while the government investigated the circumstances surrounding the collapse,

He expressed concern at the growing disregard for law and order by builders, adding that the government was determined to restore common sense and order to the sector.

He also said that the state government has declared the incidents of building collapses to be intolerable.

Mr. Salako urged the people of Lagos to join the government in maintaining vigilance in the built environment by reporting any illegal development in their vicinity.

He added that violations should be reported through all departmental or state government communication channels, especially the APP and LASBCA of the Department of Land Use Planning and Urban Development. 'Lagos State.
