Commonwealth Games: Nigeria team medalists and coaches receive cash awards in Birmingham

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has disbursed $25,000 for Team Nigeria athletes who have so far won medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Athletes and their coaches were honored for bringing glory to their homelands at a friendly ceremony held at Birmingham's Hilton Garden

Gold medalists, Adijat Adenike Olarinoye and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal received $5,000 each, while their coaches also received $3,000 each.

Folashade won gold in the women's weightlifting 59kg event while Adenike won gold in the women's weightlifting 55kg event.

Taiwo Laidi, silver medalist in the women's weightlifting 76kg event, was awarded $3,000 for her efforts.

For bronze medalists, Edidiong Joseph Umaofia, Islamiyat Yusuf and Mary Osijo all received $2,000 each for their efforts.

The event brought together the Chief of Staff of the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Abba Yola, Director of Finance at the Ministry Olufehinti Olusegun, and Simon Ebhojiaye who is the Head of Delegation of the Nigerian team to the games.

Women's 59kg Weightlifting Gold Medalist Folashade Lawal said: "I am delighted that we were rewarded even before the end of the competition, I thank the Honorable Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, for its proactivity in this regard".< /p>

"It is very timely for us, because this act will encourage and inspire all athletes to do more. For me, I want to thank the Minister for this and I am very excited, "he said. she declared.
