EPL: He can't play a counter-attack - Micah Richards backs Ten Hag against Ronaldo

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has backed Erik ten Hag's decision to leave Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench in Manchester United's 6-3 loss to neighbors Manchester City.

Three goals each from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland saw the multiple Premier League champions condemned to their second heaviest defeat of the season.

Antony and Anthony Martial netted 3 goals for the visitors, but their goals only served as a consolation, with Pep Guardiola's side taking all three points.

While Piers Morgan and some former United stars like Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand have criticized the former Ajax boss for leaving the veteran striker out, Richards believes Ronaldo didn't suit the current style of pressing football at Old Trafford.

During a heated argument with Roy Keane on Sky Sports, Richards asked: "But does his [Ronaldo] style of play suit the way they want to go?

"I said that last season Ronaldo should play, I agree with you. But I say the way the manager wants to set up now, coming to the Etihad on the counterattack .

"But the results that Man United got against Liverpool, against Arsenal, they sat back and played on the counterattack."
