Declining level of education due to rushed recruitment of teachers

The owner of Topfaith Schools, Mkpatak in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Emmanuel Abraham, has attributed the declining level of education in the country to what 'he called recruitment of teachers by refugees.

Speaking to reporters at the school premises recently, the educator recalled that faculty of education teachers were privileged by the government in all universities in the early 1960s and 1970s, but regretted that this incentive had been discontinued. < /p>

He described the school system recruitment exercise as “refugee recruitment” where only those seeking livelihoods are employed to teach in schools, many of them having no passion for work.

The owner observed that the workforce has deteriorated in the school system, so those who remain now are best described as "refugee teachers".

Abraham, whose secondary school produced the highest-scoring student in the 2023 WAEC exam in Nigeria, argued that the cause of the drop in educational standards in recent times is the attitude and urged government and stakeholders to address it accordingly.

“The government should train teachers as a solution to the declining level of education in the country,” he said.

He noted that in the current education system, NCE teachers are more qualified than second-grade teachers in the past, but struggle in math and other subjects outside their area of specialization.

He advised the government to review the process of teacher recruitment and welfare for effective intervention in declining education standards.
