Fintiri vs Binani: Buhari, IGP says arrest those who attacked INEC commissioner Zuru

The Board of Trustees of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, ICCON, on Wednesday condemned the horrific attack on Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, during the just-concluded gubernatorial election in the state from Adamawa.

Zuru was a National Commissioner of the National Dependent Electoral Commission, INEC, deployed to Adamawa State for the gubernatorial re-election on April 15.

During his mission, Zuru was manhandled by unscrupulous elements for refusing to participate in the illegal declaration of the suspended INEC resident electoral commissioner, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.

Council Chairperson Fanna Inna Abdulrahman instructed the federal government and the Inspector General of Police to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack.

Abdulrahman said the attack was an "unworthy, despicable and barbaric treatment" inflicted on Zuru's person and integrity.

Condemning the attack, Abdulrahman called on the federal government to compensate Zuru for the humiliation, as the professor is a man of truth.

A statement from Abdulrahman reads: "As former President and Chairman of the 3rd Board of ICCON, we can attest and warrant that the character of Professor Zuru is a humble and gentlemanly man who always stands for truth and honesty and does in no way deserve to be treated like this by his abusers while on a national mission.

"It inflicted pain not only on the Dean of Statesmen and his family, but also on his colleagues in academia and his professional associates.

"For a man of his stature who served as Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and Kebbi State University as well as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, rather than win national awards for his contributions to nation building, Professor Zuru was subjected to such a barbaric act.

"We are of the view that just as INEC urges the prosecution of the suspended REC, the same measure of zeal should be deployed to bring the perpetrators to justice in order to come to the aid of Professor Zuru and his whole family for the trauma they have gone through in recent days.

"It is on this premise that we, as the regulator of the practice of chemistry in Nigeria, join other well-meaning Nigerians in calling on the Federal Government and the Inspector General of police to arrest, prosecute and prosecute without further delay all perpetrators to be reserved to serve as a deterrent to others and thus, compensate Professor Zuru for the humiliation he suffered without any wrongdoing while carrying out a mission national."
