Floods: FRSC diverts traffic from Lokoja – Abuja highway

The Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) has advised road users crossing flooded roads in Kogi State to take alternate routes.

Parts of the state are facing record flooding. Vehicles, homes and farmland were submerged.

In a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, the floods have caused disruption to smooth traffic on the “Lokoja – Abuja highway for the past three days”.

The body has advised travelers to the southwestern region of the country to deviate and follow the Sule – Bida – Mokwa route.

"Motorists traveling to the southwestern region of the country via Lokoja are advised to take the Suleja-Bida-Mokwa route, while those traveling to the south-south/southeastern regions via the same city are also advised to pass through the Nasarawa-Oweto Bridge-Adoka-Otupka axis.

"This is because the water level may take another two days or more to drop," Kazeem said.

On September 17, Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello said that more than 200 communities in 10 local governments had been submerged.

Mr. Bello, who spoke to State House correspondents after a closed meeting, said he briefed the president on the situation and events in the state.

He commended the federal government for its interventions, but regretted that the scale of the disaster forced the government to provide more relief materials to the victims.

"As usual, I have come to brief Mr. President periodically on situation reports and events in my state. I am sure you are all aware of the flooding problem occurring throughout the country and Kogi is most affected being the confluence state, the confluence of the two rivers,” he said.
