Ex-Brighton man tells Souness his view on De Zerbi appointment is a load of 'rubbish'

Graeme Souness' opinion that Roberto De Zerbi is a 'risky' appointment for Brighton because he 'don't know' the Premier League is 'rubbish', says Adam Virgo.

De Zerbi was confirmed as Graham Potter's replacement this week after the 47-year-old left for Chelsea.

Ian King: Brighton may have found a strong philosophical match with Roberto De Zerbi

The Italian joins the following spells with seven other clubs, including Serie A side Sassuolo and, most recently, Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.

His stint in Shakhtar ended due to the war in Ukraine, leaving him jobless.

However, the number of roles De Zerbi has held in nine years in management worries former Liverpool manager Souness, who also claims he poses a 'risk' as 'he doesn't know our game'. Yeah.

"I think it's a risk to bring someone in with their resume, seven jobs in nine years," Souness added.

"If you're an exceptional coach, people want to keep you."

I'm sure Shakhtar would have liked to retain him. I'm also pretty sure they didn't want to be invaded by Russia, Graeme.

Former Brighton midfielder Virgo is very happy with his appointment and has said pundits in Italy believe he is a 'strong' replacement for Potter.

"You see, the respectable pundits who cover Serie A have had their say and all feel this is a very strong nomination, there is no red flag," Virgo told the site Albion official.

"There are some managers who don't necessarily work in a Champions League team, but who have done wonders."

Virgo went on to say that the argument that De Zerbi doesn't know the league is "a bit lame".

"Graham Potter worked at Swansea City before working in the Premier League, so the argument that someone 'doesn't know the league' kinda sucks, in my opinion," Virgo added.

"From what I've read and spoken to Serie A pundits, nobody says 'this is a really left-wing appointment', to me he deserved that decision.

"Brighton fans can be delighted with this nomination.

"There is always an element of risk, any leadership position is there.

"Manuel Pellegrini went to West Ham after winning the Premier League and the League Cup, it didn't work out, Rafa Benitez went to Everton as Champions League winners and it didn't work out. didn't work.

"You have to give managers time and respect to develop players and you know Roberto will get that with Albion."

De Zerbi's first game in charge of Brighton is a tricky one as he takes his side to Anfield to take on Liverpool.

A home game against unbeaten Tottenham a week later isn't easy either.

As for Potter, he is yet to take charge of a Premier League game for Chelsea after being appointed two weeks ago.

His only game in charge was the 1-1 draw at home to Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League.

Potter's first player in the league is Crystal Palace, which could be a very tricky encounter.
