How sustainability and hybrid working became part of IT design | Alex Cho

Alex Cho, President of HP Personal Systems, showed off a slew of gear ranging from a HyperX keyboard with goofy animal characters to HP's latest Omen gaming PCs at the CES 2023 tech show.

These new HP products highlighted major trends in modern computing design, with an emphasis on sustainability and the hybrid world of work and personal time.

HP Personal Systems showed up with a variety of new products, and I had the opportunity to interview Cho about the trends he saw. We chatted in a showroom at the Aria Hotel in Las Vegas, after most of the products were unveiled at the show.

Cho sees hybrid computers as a huge catalyst for innovation, while sustainability has gone in unpredictable directions, like using coffee grounds in a computer.

Here is an edited transcript of our interview.

Alex Cho is president of HP Personal Systems.

VentureBeat: Hybrid seems to be the strategy here. How long has this been going on? The whole pandemic era, down to making products for hybrid living?

Alex Cho: Hybrid, for us, is a great catalyst for a lot of innovation, but it just validates and accelerates the things we've been working on overall. A key thing that this accelerates for us, we have said that our intention is not to be a provider of PC speeds and flows. You heard me talk about this. We look to experiences and solutions. The hybrid was an incredible catalyst to achieve this. More than just being in the PC and IDC PC markets, we're going to look at hybrid work, hybrid life. How can we be a leader in the solutions there? How can we be a leader in gaming?

A third thing we're talking about here at CES is the importance of – we're going to innovate for hybrid work, life, play, and also innovate for sustainability. These are the three big areas where you've seen ads for us. We think that's very good for the industry, really for our customers, all the innovation. And then it's a strong long-term growth driver for us.

VentureBeat: Gary Shapiro said that sustainability, and also technology for good, was a theme this year. Sounds like you.

Cho: What I'm saying is that last year was the year of 100% for us. 100% of our PCs and monitors had recycled materials. One hundred percent of the PCs we shipped in 2022 were EP Gold. We are like 2X our next competitor. 100% of our paper packaging has now switched to recycled materials from sustainable sources. 100% Energy Consumption: We are moving towards sustainable energy sources in the manufacturing process for 95% of our portfolio. This is not a token initiative. This is a large-scale initiative.

What we announced here at CES is that we are going further. We are embarking on new innovations in sustainability. We introduced new types of materials like coffee grounds that we use in our new all-in-one.
