I settled Osun's debt before leaving office - Aregbesola

Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola said on Saturday his administration was debt-free when he left office in 2018.

Aregbesola, who is now interior minister, reacted to the statement attributed to Bola Oyebamiji, the former finance commissioner under the administration of outgoing governor, Gboyega Oyetola.

In a statement made available to The PUNCH by his press assistant, Mr. Sola Fasure, on Saturday, Aregbesola said that the two main loans he had contracted during his tenure had been liquidated, adding: “It was the Sukkuk loans and the other was a long-term federal government concession facility that has a long repayment term.

"The deductions are minimal and they are not deductions that will impinge on the state's finances.

Reacting to the controversial N18 billion loan debt raised by the Oyetola-led administration, the Minister said: "I will suggest that they review all loans and approach to the Accountant General of the State in Abéré. I think the Accountant General or the Permanent Secretary (Finance) would have better information because it was the Accountant General who issued a note based on Governor Adeleke's request.

"He is the most knowledgeable about government loans as a custodian of the government account." They should exclude Aregbesola from it. »

Speaking further, Aregbesola pointed out that the matter is between the Adeleke and Oyetola administrations because its debts have been liquidated.

"I was not the one who took out the N18 billion loan taken out after the election. Oyetola has taken out other loans, including federal government wage assistance,” he added.

The minister claimed that they themselves caused the problem, adding: "If Oyetola had set up a transition committee and cooperated well with the new governor after his defeat in the elections, there would have been a smooth transition. change of government.

"They would have compared notes and there would have been no hard feelings. But he (Oyetola) was busy sowing mines in the way of the new governor, creating problems for him and spending money with reckless abandon What did he do with 18 billion naira Now the new government is fighting back If the new government takes the matter to the EFCC there would be problems for Oyetola administration.

Aregbesola, however, pleaded with Adeleke and Oyetola to let him out of their troubles as out of the three loans he took, two were liquidated.
