Injury stuns Musa as 18 Super Eagles players arrive for Algeria friendly

The Super Eagles camp is bubbling with 18 players for the September 27 friendly match against Algeria's Desert Foxes.

Unfortunately, the captain of the team, Ahmed Musa, will not be part of the match in Oran as he was ruled out with injury.

Musa, who plays for Turkish football club Sivasspor, is the fourth player to be ruled out of the friendly against Algeria after being initially signed up by coach Jose Peseiro.

Turkey-based Henry Onyekuru also withdrew from the match due to injury, while the duo of Leon Balogun and Samuel Chukwueze are also unavailable.

Coach Peseiro has since called on the quartet of Valentine Ozornwafor, Godwin Savior, Ebube Duru and Emmanuel Dennis as replacements.

The Super Eagles and Foxes missed out on qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar, but want to use this friendly to prepare ahead of the 2023 Nations Cup in Ivory Coast.

Although Peseiro lost 2-1 to Mexico and 1-0 to Ecuador in his first round of friendlies, he was perfect in the AFCON qualifying series with wins against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe.

The Portuguese manager will work with some of the players for the first time as they were unavailable for the USA double friendly and the AFCON qualifiers double header.

These include goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who has only returned to the Super Eagles since the exit of the AFCON tournament squad in Morocco.

Others like Ebube Duru of Rivers United, Godwin Savior and Raphael Onyedika are seeking early caps for the national team.

The first team training will take place on Tuesday, September 20 at 4:30 p.m.

The 18 players in the camp are - Okoye, Ekong, Omeruo, Awaziem, Aina, Bassey, Sanusi, Akpoguma, Ozornwafor, Ndidi, Onyeka, Iwobi, Onyedika, Simon, Awoniyi, Ejuke, Dessers, Moffi.

Those expected are Uzoho, Adebayo, Duru, Savior, Iheanacho, Lookman.
