Lack of direct supply from NNPC, not eld-el-Kabir celebration responsible for fuel shortage, says IPMAN Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), covering Oyo and Osun States, Alhaji Bukola Mutiu, has said that the inability of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to provide a direct supply of petroleum products to traders is responsible for the scarcity recorded in recent times.

Mutiu, who was reacting to the long queues seen at gas stations in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State and surrounding areas, particularly a day before the celebration of Eid-ul- Kabir in an interview with Saturday Tribune on Friday, said if traders are able to source supplies directly from NNPC, Nigerians would not face the difficulties of petrol supply.

He said, "NNPC has 21 depots across Nigeria, the southwestern part of the country had five and none of them are functioning to date.

"That's why we decided to go buy from the private depot. The private depots don't have enough. That's why you see some depots selling today, others won't sell tomorrow.

“As industry players, we are in the dark, we cannot say precisely what is going on. come out and tell us and other Nigerians what is really going on.”

Reacting to a statement credited to him in an online post that the fuel shortage was occasioned by the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, Mutiu noted that he had at no time makes such comments and that he will never be able to do so, while urging journalists to verify the information before publication.

Mutiu, however, concluded that: "If NNPC can supply products to us directly as registered traders, I believe this scarcity problem will be a thing of the past."
