Leg surgery: APC governors hail Osinbajo for patronizing Nigerian hospital

Governors of the ruling party, the APC, under the umbrella of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), have praised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for his confidence in the Nigerian medical establishment.

PGF Chairman and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, while briefing reporters after a visit to the Vice President on Tuesday, said Mr. Osinbajo's decision to seek medical treatment in Nigeria has revealed the medical ability of doctors in Nigeria.

He noted that the surgery performed by the Vice President shows that there is capacity in the Nigerian medical sector.

Mr. Bagudu said that “many Nigerians should take steps to discover the incredible opportunities and capabilities that exist in the medical establishment.

“He (Osinbajo) brought to our attention something that we did not know. In other countries, health professionals can advertise their skills. In Nigeria, there is a professional code of conduct that refuses the possibility."

He said the governors had come to express their joy for the recovery and to have confidence in the Nigerian medical establishment.

Responding, Mr. Osinbajo commended the expertise of Nigerian doctors and the availability of state-of-the-art medical facilities existing in the country.

He regretted that doctors are prevented by regulations from advertising and that, as a result, many people are unaware of the level of quality of medical services available locally.

The Vice President underwent surgery on July 16 at Duchess International Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, for a knee injury sustained while playing squash.

Mr. Osinbajo's decision to seek treatment in a Nigerian hospital was welcomed by many, considering that most other civil servants attend hospitals abroad.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that in June 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari spent 200 days in the UK for medical treatment.

Last year, APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu spent three months in the UK for a medical procedure.

Mr. Osinbajo, who finished third in the June APC presidential primaries, has had limited public appearances since the operation.

Last week, he physically joined the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for the first time since the operation.

Appeal to ASUU

Talking about the continuing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Mr. Bagudu said that professors must heed the president's moral suasion.

Teachers have been on strike since February 14 over the renegotiated FGN-ASUU agreement in 2009.

On Monday, the ASUU announced that the six-month strike would now be indefinite after a meeting at the union's national headquarters at the University of Abuja between Sunday and Monday.

Mr. Bagudu said the president's call in July was made in good faith.

"Remember during a visit from Sallah - when we visited the President in Daura, Mr. President appealed to ASUU and said that ASUU should be aware of the future of the next generation.

“He (Buhari) did not play the blame game. He spoke as a father and I think he even went further saying that even if ASUU was offended, they should please think about our next generation.

“I think this is the best political statement that can come and we all appeal to the ASUU in particular and all stakeholders. Let us do what will ensure we do not miss out. with other countries, we do not have the luxury of time, so we will continue to urge all stakeholders,” he said.

Other Governors present at the meeting were Kayode Fayemi from Ekiti State, Abdulrasak Abdulrahman from Kwara State, Abubakar Badaru from Jigawa State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu from Lagos State and Abdullahi Sule from Nasarawa State.

The others were Sani Bello from Niger State, Simon Lalong from Plateau State, Inuwa Yahaya from Gombe State...
