Messi's return to Barcelona is possible next year, says Romeu

Barcelona economic vice-president Eduard Romeu has insisted the club can afford to bring Lionel Messi back to Camp Nou next year.

The 35-year-old sees his contract with Paris Saint-Germain come to an end at the end of the season and will decide his future after the World Cup in Qatar.

Should Messi become available on a free transfer, a host of clubs are likely to be given an interest in the Argentina international, and Romeu has made it clear that Barca can afford a deal.

"As it would be for free, surely it's something we can do. But it would be a technical decision anyway," he told Mundo Deportivo.

While Messi would not demand a transfer fee if his deal with PSG comes to an end, significant funds would be required from his salary.

He spent 21 years at Barcelona, scoring a record 672 goals in 778 appearances for the senior side, before moving to PSG on a shock-free transfer in August 2021.

After investing heavily in the squad during the transfer window, Romeu added that further additions could be made in January.

"There is room but we made a very important effort this summer and if we needed a supplement, we would have to study it," he added.
