Nani urges former Man Utd team-mate Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford

Nani has implored Manchester United to do all they can to ensure Cristiano Ronaldo stays at the club despite speculation linking him with an exit.

Ronaldo has reportedly asked to leave Old Trafford in this transfer window, and Chelsea are believed to be among the early favorites for his signature before the Blues sign striker Raheem Sterling.

New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly reportedly held talks with the Portugal captain before American and manager Thomas Tuchel chose to resist the temptation to make a bid.

Bayern Munich, who lost talisman Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona, were another team linked with Ronaldo, but Julian Nagelsmann and general manager Oliver Kahn were quick to rule out a move.

Erik ten Hag has repeatedly insisted that Ronaldo is unavailable for transfer, with the new United manager making it clear he wants to keep the 37-year-old at the club.

As United failed to qualify for the Champions League last season, which would have been a deciding factor in Ronaldo's displeasure, former Red Devils winger Nani has urged his compatriot to stay with the Ten Hag team.

"I hope he stays," said Nani, who recently signed for Melbourne Victory and made a late appearance in their 4-1 friendly loss to United on Friday.

"He is an important player and a player who always makes a difference. I hope he is in a good mood to help the club, so I hope he stays."

Nani also revealed that he tried to contact Ronaldo to discuss his future, but the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is busy on vacation.

"When he's on vacation he doesn't answer the phone to anyone," added Nani, who won four Premier League titles and a Champions League at United. "I tried to talk to him, but he said, 'I'm so busy now, we'll talk soon.'"

United hope to have Ronaldo at their disposal when they start their Premier League campaign at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on August 7.
